no the path to login hasn't changed.
I don't understand what you mean when you say "the search engine substitutes"? What search engine?
are you or are you not using clean urls?
Returning from maintenance
I am using clean urls
I mean the browser bar at the very top of the IE page where you can type in the url to avoid doing an actual search
Sorry for the confusion
It strikes me tjhat there must be a TRU/FALSE flag somewhere which tells Drupal that the site is under maintenance or open to view.
I can't find it.
Does anyone know where it is and how to change it?

it's in the database somewhere. off hand I don't know where.
i believe it's in the system
i believe it's in the system table-- "offline" or something like that...

Returning after Maintenance
It really is in the system!
I eventually worked around the problem in a pretty extreem manner.
I was using D5.7 - D6 having given me problems with the modules mode dissapearing just as i was ready for a relaunch.
However, I did have the option of upping the working site from D5.7 to D5.9 which I did.
Problem solved
A bit extreme but back on-line and that's the name of the game.

updating to 5.9 isn't all that extreme. I'd call it smart and safe.
Glad you are back up and running.
Spoke too soon
IE and Firefox are adding '/install' onto the URL name and I'm back where I started
