How about integrating a 'percentage of profile completed' block into the pageroute module. I feel this would be a reasonable place for it to go.

Associate a particular percentage to each content type associated with the nodeprofile and update the block accordingly. If they click on complete the profile it runs them through pageroute to complete it.

A good idea, we actually thought about something like that.
Maybe it will be implemented in the drupal6 version.
