How to make homepage a portal like Yahoo and AOL?

There's difference between portal and home page. What do you want to do? Build a portal? Or build a home page that resembles home pages of portals like AOL or Yahoo!?

If you want to build a home page like Yahoo! or AOL, you will require several regions on the front page. You may also require custom content types with custom styles. Panels, CCK and Views module are great modules to build such pages.

I am actually interested to whether or not we can make a news portal, like Yahoo's, using Drupal. I am trying to stylize the feeds that I am aggregating. It would be nice if I can put my feeds in a slideshow like yahoo's. Linkedin has a similar portal that I am interested in. I guessing that they use jquery or javascript, but I am not sure. Does anyone have any ideas of how to go about this.
