Description

Usability? What is wrong with terms that normal users have a chance of understanding?

prune=cut, graft=paste, promote=convert

hehe, i had to look all of these words

exactly! Everyone understands the terms cut and paste. The action of 'promoting' is a misnomer, it is actually a convert IMHO!

I say let's be even more wordy to be clear.

Prune -> Move this post
Graft -> Paste moved post as child of this post
Promote -> Promote comment to full post

That text is probably too long for most designs.

Big thumbs up for the terms mentioned by the topic starter

Create icons and use my text as alt?

Love the icons idea

Better yet - use icons with the lengthier text as tooltips.

Ease of use is definitely something I will be focusing on. Loving the ideas.

Marking this as postponed for now as it will be included in the upcoming 2.x series.

Alternatives:

Step 1: "cut" or "move"
Step 2, a: "paste-as-node" or "convert" ("to-node-thread")
Step 2, b: "paste-thread"

I think "promote" is confusing, as we are used to think about that related to the front page. I suggest "as-node" instead, perhaps with an accompanying optional block with descriptions and logically named links that occur AFTER one has chosen the first step (move, cut, or the like).

The initial step is the challenge:
We cannot place an information block on ("all") normal node view pages, hence not easy to tell people what "prune" means BEFORE they have actually clicked on that link...

Would it be sufficient to place a description in the "alt" tag of the prune link?

Strictly speaking, prune and graft is not bad, and they are short and consise. Especially practical if they are accompanied with a description.

Ditch the words 'prune' and 'graft'. They are not intuitive. I'll give a bag of prunes for every random non-techie you find who thinks graft is an intuitive term for the task we're talking about... ;-)

Here's a vote for

Step 1: "move" (1b "paste comment")
Step 2, a: "convert"
Step 2, b: "paste-thread"

Dittos #2 on "promote"... the term already has another meaning in Drupal.

Another idea: how about make the tool easily themable then we can use whatever terms we like w/o hacking the module.
