During installlation of the module in Drupal 6.3 I have received this info in the list of modules:

Image 5.x-2.0-alpha2 This version is incompatible with the 6.3 version of Drupal core.

In image.info there is this line:

version = "5.x-2.0-alpha2"

All contrib modules have the same info (5.x...).

you've probably got either the wrong version downloaded or you've got an old version of the module sitting around someplace that drupal is finding before the 6.x one.
