Not sure if I'm allowed to post a non-question, but here goes...

After installing the Print Friendly module (very nice) and TCPDF, I was looking for fonts that supported Japanese and found a nice collection here, courtesy of our chums at Joomla:

As well as Japanese, several other double-byte language fonts are available including Arabic and Chinese.
In the case of TCPDF, put the .z and .php files in the fonts subfolder and you're away. Don't forget to specify which font you want to use - in the Print Friendly module it's in print.pdf.inc around line 90.
