I've attached a patch which adds Buddylist2 support for the "Add buddy", "Remove buddy" links.

The file is a Unix diff of advanced_profile.module, generated by ExamDiff. Sorry, I'm not on CVS.

Buddylist 2 looks like a dead end and this patch is unlikely to apply after the upcoming changes.

Please can you clarify by 'dead end' and upcoming changes? I was thinking of using this module...is there something else I should look at? I'm using 5.x.

If you look at the top of the project page, it tells you to use friendlist. All the action is around friendlist and user relationships.

As for changes, I'm going to be redoing how contrib is handled to match advanced forum, which means this patch won't work anymore.

Seems to me that friendlist will (probably) never be ported to D5 ... which leaves us (for now) with APK & Buddylist2.
