I checked both PicLens options, and although the piclens Add-on works by itself (I can click the link in my browser), nothing happens when I click the "Start slideshow" link displayed as a drupal message at the top of the gallery. Any ideas?

Can you look in the source if you can find piclens_optimized.js ? It's probably not available.
Can you try the development version, because this should fix the inclusion of the javascript.
