I read at http://drupal.org/node/264830 that there are issues here that reference examples on how to theme filefield, but I'm not finding them when searching the word "theme" through advanced search. Perhaps others could post the links to these items so that I can work on some documentation or share briefly what knowledge you have so I can write it up a bit more formally.

I'm personally interested in theming related to views on Drupal 6.

please go read the generic CCK and views theming guides. Read up on CCK formatters as well they can both help you. If you don't know how to theme drupal and can't use the theme developer plugin, RTFM.

If there is nothing unique about filefield themeing as the document I referenced suggest, then I'd recommend removing it as it is simply confusing. It told me to come here looking specifically for what I asked about.

Sorry to have caused such a fuss. I thought an offer to handle some documentation would be of interest as I've heard elsewhere that this is a general drupal need.
