Over the past two months I've been working in my spare time on a website gallery (http://drupalbased.com) dedicated to Drupal powered websites, now I'm finally happy to announce it to the rest of the drupal community.

The site is built using Drupal 6 and because of this the first step I did before I started anything was to plan on a piece of paper exactly what I wanted on the site.

The site's main focus is showcasing with images so the first module that came to my mind was CCK image, but that wasn't drupal 6 ready so I was pleased to find another module called 'Image' maintained by walkah, which after testing it out turned out to work perfectly for my needs! it allows me to simply upload a screenshot and the image module takes care of resizing and thumbnail creation.

The rest of the modules I had on my list were drupal 6x ready even though some were still in dev release, I would like to add that I recommend http://drupalmodules.com when searching for modules, it makes things alot easier.

After making sure all the modules were drupal 6 ready I started the next stage of creating the layout design in Photoshop.

The Layout

The layout is quite simple and to the point and that's how I like my sites. this site was the 2nd outcome of two layouts one which was light (white/blue) the other dark ( the one you see now). The colour choice is something I'm sure many will disagree on but because the site is showcasing I feel darker colours work well and allows the website thumbnails being showcased to stand out.

Community Features

The site has some extra neat features that I hope the community might find it resourceful.
Drupal job board
The drupal job board where people can post drupal specific jobs which was set up using the drupal job posting module maintained by gmarus.
Drupal resource links
Another feature on the site is the "Drupal resource links" , it allows users to submit and share drupal related articles from around the web. This is done using custom Views.

Modules

I always liked the idea of sharing which modules a site uses in case someone down the line is looking might find it helpful for their needs.

Drupal 6 Core modules

Block, Comment, Contact, Filter, Garland, Menu, Node, Path, Ping, Statistics, Syslog, System, Taxonomy, Tracker, Update status, User.

Drupal 6 Addon modules

  • CAPTCHA : Keep those nasty Spam off the site.
  • Content Templates (Contemplate) : I know many hardcore drupal users will frown on me for using it instead of doing it properly through node-[content-type].tpl.php but honestly it made things alot easier for me.
  • Content Construction Kit: I must have module to create custom fields for specific content.
  • Fivestar: The star rating under each site is
  • Image: As i mentioned before, this module was a life saver without it i would have been forced to create the site in Drupal 5
  • Job Posting: This module is very powerful and if customised enough can easily be made to run a full featured job posting site.
  • Link: This was another essential module that allowed me to link the images to the websites.
  • Meta tags: Must have SEO module to get some google love :)
  • Page Title:Same as the above
  • Views: Another module that drupal can't work effectively without
  • Voting API:Required module for Fivestar to function
  • Token: Required for page titles module
  • XML Sitemap: Another SEO related module to help with google indexing.

    The first thing I noticed is your forms are way too dark. There needs to be more contrast between the background and the form elements. It's almost impossible to make out the text entry areas. Perhaps add a light border to them.
