Hi all,

I have a drupal site that is currently sitting way back at 5.1. I am wondering if the best practice to update the site is first to take it up to say 5.9 or jump straight in to 6.3 (or 6.4 which I notice is just out today).

I had a go at an upgrade on my test site to 5.9 which worked fine (other than a very common problem with image module that I found a fix for)

what is generally considered the best way to go about an upgrade, do you need to do all the point upgrades first - is this a less error prone way of doing things?

You don't generally have to do every point upgrade, though personally I would:
1) Read all of the upgrade notes for every version to make sure.
2) Back up first.
3) For such a big jump I'd "personally" only go a few points up at a time at most (I'm probably more cautious than most).
4) Definitely get Drupal 5 up to the latest before moving to 6.
5) If you did test it and you are sure it worked then backup and give it a shot. Nothin to lose by trying :)

Backup site. Restore site on test system to validate known good backup :)

Update to 5.10. Test.

Look at available modules to make sure you can update to the 6.x branch. If yes and you want, then update to 6.4.
