Currently I see only support for the old Image Module. What is about support for the newer Imagefield module?

It is certainly possible to add. Please follow the example in the current image support.

Has anyone managed to get ImageField and Apache Solr talking to each other?

No, though it would not be too hard - one impediment is that image module generates thumbnails that can be used in search results, while imagefield does not unless coupled with imagecache.
