hello,
i just started installing drupal, and have it running now so far, but only with the /sites/default/files directory given '777' access to all, as that's the only possibility for drupal to work.
my provider replied, that it's ok to give 777, because the system is isolated, and I really belive him, because of several errors i got concerning the
disabled ini_restore and set_time_limit,
which have to stay disabeld as the provider states.
as far as i can see, this is a quite safe mode, although safe-mode is turned off, so i repeat my general question:
should i change, if i want to run drupal with some modules like FCKEditor and enabled uploads and images?
thanks

Your provider is correct, although the reason doesn't have anything to do with the errors you mentioned.
It's hard to answer your question without knowing specifically what you want to do.
You should be okay unless you are uploading massive images, but even then you should be okay. Can you edit your .htaccess file?
thank you for your reply
thanks and sorry for my long delay, i was walking in the alps for a week, so i didn`t have web-access.. (and i liked it)
the .htaccess-file has permissions 644 and can also be changed to 777, so, Yes, it should be editable, at least by downloading and uploading it again.
if you say, that (perhaps with tricks) it is also possible to upload, let`s say some 2 mb-pictures (for sharing them with others, so they can edit them) or maybe (not that important) some 10-mb videos then everything would be perfect; if not, it`s also not that bad.
maybe i can ask the provider, if it`s possible to assign the group-ownership of the 'files'-directory to the group, the webserver runs as, as it is suggested in the drupal-faq ( http://drupal.org/node/34025 ).

Have you tried changing the permissions on the files folder yourself? You should be able to change permissions on the files directory through a variety of free/commercial apps. Your webhost will probably have an online file management facility for you to do this yourself.
If your plan is basic/cheap, you might have trouble if a lot of people are downloading your videos...I'm not too sure. Are the users editing the photos/videos on their desktop or online through their web browser? If through the web browser, then I think you'll have problems editing large size images/videos.
yes, i can change the
yes, i can change the permissions with filezilla aswell as with webFTP ( the online file management facility ), but if i change it to anything else than '777', drupal cannot write anymore into the files-folder.
the traffic-topic is not a real problem, i think, because most people that will visit the site will just read it, and it' just that it would be nice to have the opportunity to share some bigger files and videos.
the provider (netroom.de) has no limitations for traffic, but will slow down the site, if traffic in between four weeks reaches more than 25 GB.
