I have finally figured out how to copy the default.settings.php and renaming it to settings.php. I have been doing this for a few days and getting no where. On my computer with Vista the default.settings.php file did NOT have .php on it. It was listed as default.settings. I have been putting .php on my copied file. If you leave the .php off the copied file the instillation works fine....
I hope this is helpful to other new people like me....

When you extract drupal you
When you extract drupal you should have both default.settings.php and settings.php so no need to rename anything.
And about the extension are you sure your Vista folder option isn't set to "Hide extensions for know file types" ???
Can you tell us what web server you use on your vista ?
File extension
You are correct. I did have ""Hide extensions for know file types" so now I have changed it and I can see .php ok. I am using apache2triad. Thank you for that information.
I have run into another issue I have 6.4 installed on my server and I have been following David Mercers book. I downloaded the DHTML module and installed it correctly I believe, but the DHTML module did not create a new DHTML menu. If anyone can help to rectify this it would be appreciated.
