I lost a couple hours banging my head during the upgrade from Imagecache 1.6 to 2.1, just because I didn't enable the imageAPI GD2 module. I finally visited the admin/logs/status page and saw the helpful message, but it would have been great if the imagecache settings page also displayed it.
