TinyMCE already offers a really good bundled in media plugin (http://wiki.moxiecode.com/index.php/TinyMCE:Plugins/media) that can supposedly embed all types of media formats such as Flash, Quicktime, Windows Media, and Real Media from third parties or files you upload. I've only tested it on embedding flash video so far and I know it works flawlessly on many sites listed above.
Also, I should note that Drupal's TinyMCE module does not enable the media plugin by default. You have to configure it yourself. I've written a blog entry previously about how to do this here:

With that said and assuming the user uses TinyMCE can any one tell me whether Embedded Media Field is superior than TinyMCE's media plugin or correct me if this is an invalid comparison?

I wouldn't say one is superior to another; they work differently. TinyMCE puts media inline, whereas emfield stores media URL's as a node. This allows for comments, other cck fields, and the like, but putting emfield inline is trickier. I'd love to work out an inline solution, but I think that's more generic than just emfield, and should be for any cck field/node.
Additionally, an issue with TinyMCE's media plugin is how it deals with uploaded files: they are not going to be registered in Drupal's file system. Not that big a deal right now, but it would be a huge issue in d7 after the hook_file is implemented.

The link above no longer works and Drupal forum doesn't let me edit the original post. Use this instead: http://spiffyd.com/blog/drupal-tinymce-media-plugin
@aaron...
Thanks for the clarification. I look forward to help test out all upcoming releases. Looks like there's quite a few kinks atm.

The link provided is actually broken. The post with the correct info (that works btw) is http://spiffyd.com/blog/drupal-tinymce-media-plugin
