Could anyone give a hint on why the search box might be showing up for only the admin user, but not the other type of users. I checked its settings and the search module is enabled and attached into in a block, which is visible to all the user types. Yet cannot be seen. Thank you in advance.

Go to /admin/user/access and check if all roles have permission to search content.

Yes I needed to enable the module by user type as well. I went to Administer -> User Management -> Permissions and checked the Search module options for various user types. It showed up.
