since forums are just nodes
since forums are just nodes with taxonomy, you might be able to use the taxonomy_access module.

then you can either wait,
then you can either wait, assist with the upgrade process, or offer to sponsor the upgrade.
This is open source "i want" is not likely to get you very far if you don't wish to assist.

You can wait, or.... you can use great free PHPBB3 software and use the drupal phpbb module + install patch to get it to synch users with Drupal 6...yes it can be done....search forums...I messed it up, but my trusty tech support did it no sweat.

you have to be willing to
you have to be willing to put the time in to theme it to match the drupal site though. There's nothing tackier or that screams "i'm an amateur web site builder and i don't know what i'm doing" louder than when someone clicks on the forum link and a page loads that completely mismatches the rest of the site.

LOL....at very least.....but then again it's true.....this is a DIY/amateur project...I don't know enough to even start to mod the bb3 look....another one to add to the task list....I was just after the functionality and look of BB3...which I liked better than the drupal forum module...

Wow, that's a nice site--
Wow, that's a nice site-- and very "undrupal". But just think how jarring it would be though, if they had a forum link that led to a standard phpbb forum, lol. It shouldn't be too difficult to at least match the drupal header and color scheme-- even that would go a long way toward minimizing the jolt.
