If I have unpublished content, anonymous user gets a message saying "You are not authorized to view this page", or something like that. If I have a lot of unpublished content does this lead to duplicate content as many different urls lead to a page with exactly the same content??

unpublished content
Unpublished pages send a "403" header, so Google won't index them even if you point links at them. Drupal won't create links to those pages unless you manually create them, or forget to filter unpublished pages out of your views. I recommend not linking to pages that send 403 or 404 headers even though Google won't index them.
