When uploading an image there's also a description field. It's not clear what this field is for. When I fill it in , nothing shows up when viewing the node. I would like to use this field to show a description of the picture below the picture in the node view.

Indeed. For my site I don't want this field at all. I can't unset it using FormAPI seems to be baked into the actual widget rendering? Still trying to track down how to get rid of it...
