form throws errors before user has done anything

1. Go to Create Content -> bibliography
2. Choose a type.
3. The page reloads to add form elements. Some are shown in red and there are drupal warnings:

    * Title field is required.
    * Year of Publication field is required.
    * Authors field is required.

These shouldn't be shown -- the user hasn't had a chance to put a title field in yet!
