Based on work by nbz, here's a patch to render the "Inbox," "Write New," and "Sent" links as tabs instead of in the menu tree.

A word of warning - this patch does not work well without #297848: Overview not needed as there is no working link to the inbox. But with that patch, all is golden.

Whoops! You're right: both of those really need to be done together to get the full functionality (and eliminate a SQL error if you do try to go to the Inbox). Here's a single patch for both.

Moving to your user tabs is a whole nuther -- although related -- issue. Open a feature request for 5.x (this feature is done for D6) and perhaps someone will write a patch for that.
