Users are autosubscribed on register, regardless of settings

I have a single list, and I have autosubscribe on register turned off... and I have the list visible on the signup form.
Whenever a user registers, they are automatically subscribed to the mailing list! Even when they uncheck the checkbox, they are still subscribed against their will.
I have double checked and re-saved the module settings to no avail.
What could cause this? I've tried the dev version as well and the issue remains.

Hi BobbyDigital,
My deepest apologies for not having replied sooner - I completely overlooked this one! I have managed to find out why the problem happens now. Just need to work out how to get round it without breaking anything else. Watch this space...
