I am upgrading an old site and I want to use the front module for my front page.
I am thinking of putting two distinct boxes one on top of the other in front page - the top block will contain two blocks arranged horizontally and the bottom box will also contain three blocks arranged horizontally.
How can I arrange multiple boxes on front page without using panels? Do I create new regions in a new front page page.tpl ? Can anyone give coding assistance for this ?
I do not want to use panels for the frontpage because it does not give flexibility to theme the boxes the way I want. Can anyone advise on how to do this ?
Thanks

Use
Use http://drupal.org/project/panels. Create a new panel, embed the blocks you need into it. And modify admin/settings/site-information to point the front page to your new panel.

The front module seems to indicate you can have...
"full HTML/Flash/PHP splash spage"
This being the case simply produce a dedicated PHP page with the approrpiate DIV tags and CSS entries to determine where you're going to position your blocks. Within these DIVs simply use PHP to extract the information from Drupal and then display it.

Main Story
It would really depend on what you wanted to display in that block.
