Files seem to be uploaded in an arbitrary order, rather than in the order that they appear in the upload list. Since the Image Gallery module uses node creation order to sort its images, this means that there is no way to maintain the order of any uploaded gallery (uploading whole galleries is probably one of the key applications of this module).
