While reading some recent comments on my site, I realised the dates were all wrong. Upon further inspection, I saw that the dates shown were the same as the dates for the parent node (i.e. if the original content was created on April 2, 2007 - all subsequent comments share that date).
Changing to the Garland theme removed the error and showed the correct dates, so it has to be an issue with this theme...

If you want to grab the files from CVS HEAD get both comment.tpl.php and style.css as I have modded comment tpl slightly and you need the new CSS to support it.
