OK, I've installed the 6.x version of the module, and I've activated it in the modules administration page, but I don't see how to actually use it. It doesn't seem to show up for existing content. What am I overlooking here?

Did you activate it in the User Management -> Permissions page?
You should then see a content type drop down when you begin to edit or add content.
