Great idea! In fact, I came up with the same idea when I was porting the module to D6, so I added it in. Haven't updated the d.o version yet because I was waiting for feedback on the D6 port. However, the beta D5 and D6 modules available from this page (at the bottom) have a User by Role block like you describe. I'm using it on the demo site's forum page to show a (fake) list of forum moderators. Some documentation on this page. Would love to hear any feedback you might be able to provide.

I'm using the beta D5 module from the Roople site. I want all of my avatar blocks to be potentially role aware so I copy and pasted the relevant code from the User By Role block to all the other blocks.

It works great. :)

Maybe you could add this option to your next official release?
