could this module be the cause, since it checks for images recursively

yeah i am and this is the only module that does any recursive stuff :D

That message does not come from TI. Nor have I seen this on any of the sites where I use the recursive option. But I tossed Contemplate because it does not handle taxonomy terms correctly. I'm marking this as a duplicate of the above issue.
