Just curious, if anyone would like to take a guess at comparing the percentage of Drupal versions in actual use? Is there any actual way of counting?

I'm guessing that there are mountains of "let's try this out" sites running D6, but that nearly all of the big production sites (as well as plenty of small sites) are using D4 or D5. Do you agree?

Just guessing, I agree with you.

There's some info on slide 36 onwards in the slides from Dries' lates State of Drupal presentation, see http://szeged2008.drupalcon.org/program/sessions/state-drupal. (I wasn't at Szeged, so I'm enviously browsing the presentations and thinking "Maybe next time" :-) )
