If I try to leave Year of Publication empty for a custom type, I get a message instructing me that the field will accept "Submitted" and "In Press" values. However, the form field does not permit me to enter more than four characters (which makes sense for a date).

Yeah, we are having the same problem now. We want to get rid of the field but even if we uncheck "common" and "required" it is required that one enter a number between "1 and 1"--which makes little sense--or enter "Submitted" or "In Press". I am very confused--can one not just get rid of this box altogether?

yes, we have same problem. imported records insert Submitted for this field, but when go to edit I get stuck and have to either clear that field or input a legit date...

Sorry the fix for this didn't get into beta-9, but it will be in the next round for sure.
