In many cases, Drupal 5 modules will have been deprecated but other options will be available in 6.x. For example, Views Bookmark is deprecated; users are advised to use flag instead. It would be useful for upgrade status to handle at least these explicit, unambiguous cases.

There's not any standard way for this information to be retrieved by the Update Status module. Your best bet is to always see if there are any recommended modules on the orphaned module's project page, or just search. Maybe in the future there will be support for a deprecated or similar feature in the project.module.
