Hi,

I have read most of the threads in this support forum and it seems that some of the other people experienced this problem before me. Unfortuantelly, I can't figure out how they fixed the issue.
The message I get is
Error sending e-mail from xxxx@ecxx.org to xxxx@yahoo.com: SMTP Error: The following recipients failed: xxxx@yahoo.com

All the settings (smtp server, username, etc) in the SMTP module are correct and the interesting part is that when I send a message to an email on the same @ecxx.org it arrives fine. I tried looking around our GFI antispam, but that brought me nowhere. Could it be that the Microsoft Exchange is blocking the outgoing messages.

Help would be really appreciated. We are a not-for-profit organisation and are setting up a page, so sending out emails would be essential. Thanks

Jan

Yahoo may be rejecting it because of the lack of an appropriately set up "PTR" record at the server where the SMTP is being handled. It's a kind of reverse DNS lookup which ties an IP to a domain name. A server with a PTR record properly set up has a much harder time sending out spam annonymously. The likes of Yahoo then come along and outright reject email coming from such a server without a PTR without making other attempts to figure out if the incoming email is actually spam.

I'm definitely no expert in all of this, but I had a similar problem using the SMTP module, and the rejects were only coming from certain hosts. In my case, the big problem was Comcast.

I have a dedicated server with full support. Interestingly, the support people said it was standard procedure to install the PTR records, but hadn't been done when they initially configured my server. It took two rounds of this tech support fussing because they didn't do it right the first time.

I could not say whether your problem is this problem. But I thought I'd write.

Also, I note that you had assigned the problem to yourself. I'm unassigning it because I think you likely did that by accident. Typically you assign a bug report to yourself if you plan on troubleshooting it and submitting a patch. But this is a support request and you seem to be asking for help and not offering it. So that's why I'm unassigning it.

best,

Shai

Title: SMTP » Troubleshooting Recipient Failures

I'm changing the title of this support request. Since this is the SMTP module issue queue, the node title "SMTP" didn't add any information about the nature of the support request.
