PKP OCS (Open Conference Systems) Integration with Drupal

Hello,

I was wondering how it would be possible to integrate the PKP (Public Knowledge Project) systems into Drupal. I guess my post is focusing primarily on the OCS.

I work on a bunch of websites that have journals and conferences. So far what I have been doing is inframing (iframe tag) the separate OJS (Open Journal Systems) and OCS (Open Conference Systems installations into my website. Needless to say there are some sharp aesthetics, performance, and convenience decreases.

I found this nice E-Journal module for Drupal. It is apparently based on OJS but of course, not as extensive. There is no 6.x release but we can expect one fairly soon.

Now I did not really find an alternative for the Open Conference Systems (OCS). I found the Conference Module which looked like it much of the way there. However development seems to have stopped. There were a couple of other modules but they too also seem either dead or too specialized.

I would greatly appreciate any direction in this matter.

Thanks in advance,

Yep - the only way so far

Okay. I think I have found the answer. The are pretty much only two solutions. The Conference module and another Conference Organizing module. However the Conference Organizing module is fairly limited as to its applications and it looks like it had died (perhaps due to the Conference Module alternative).

So the Conference module is really all you can use. Unfortunately development has stopped and the developer(s) have implicated that they will not continue it. There is no Drupal 6 version and there is not a stable 5.x version (There is a working "5.x-1.x-dev" version though.

Drupal 6 users don't have much options at the moment. You could try to integrate the OCS from the PKP using an iframe (what I have been doing so far). Or the E-Journal module could be slightly modified to be used as a conference (Since there is not that much difference between a conference and a journal). This is what the PKP actually did with OJS to create OCS.

If anyone has other suggestions please post 'em here.

I followed your link and as of Dec 2008, conference module has a beta for Drupal 6 and seems to have active development again.

Yes. That is wonderful. In time, both of these modules will be very competitive with OCS and OJS. I look forward to that, and I am sure that many others do too.

If I'm correct, the

If I'm correct, the conference module is aimed at submission and reviewing of conference papers, and the Conference Organizing Distribution takes the approach of organizing conferences and scheduling sessions, and allowing participants to sign-up and collaborate.

We are considering our options regarding the organizing of conferences, and will probably come back on this issue shortly.
If anyone knows of other initiatives in this area, please share them so we can take them into account!

Thijs
