i have seen and read blogs in many drupal build sites with the blogger name along with his picture. how am i to provide my users to chose their own avathars and gets displayed along with their name(my site is under construction and has not been hosted yet.)

FIrstly, in the user settings. you can allow users to upload their picture/avatar.

Secondly, in theme settings you can choose to show the pictures in the node/comment.

And if you also want to give a selection of avatars to choose from, use the avatar_select module.
