I would like to remove the text string, "calendar" from teasers and full event node displays on my site but am not sure which file I should be poking around in to make the customization. Can someone point me in the right direction?

Event for Drupal 8 is unrelated to older versions. If an issue similar to this one exists, please open a new issue with the 8.x branch.
