advice on modules for networking site
Im looking into building a website for a local youth centre. The centre holds weekly fund raising events such as live music, etc. The aim is that perfomers can create the own profiles on the website so people can see what upcoming events are happening. The user created profiles would make up the most of the website.
What the website would need, is an initial login page which would take you to a page with just a picture/logo and explaining upcoming events. Then the rest of the site would be user created profiles.
Each profile would contain a picture and a brief discription of the user next to it such as where they are based, what they do etc. Underneath a box about 2 thirds of the page with a few headers containing blogs, diaries, other events of the performes etc. Next to that would be a smaller box about 1 third of the page where people can leave comments.
Ive been looking around and I think the websites going to be using something like Amor_Azul as the theme. And ive decided to use version 5x because there are currently more modules.
Im looking for advice on which modules to use or any imput whether its a good or bad idea etc. Maybe links to some tutorials.
Thank you.

You can do that with Panels. If you want a head start, see the Advanced Profile Kit which comes with some building blocks for putting profiles together in Panels.

You may also want to check out the following:
Privatemsg: allows users to exchange messages among themselves
Buddylist: if you need social networking type functionality
Fivestar: if you want users to be able to rate content
Weblinks: to create collections of links that you can group by category and display in a sidebar (like a blogroll)
And you will be better off using Drupal 6 if all the modules you need are available for it.

Panels problems
Thanks for the advice. I followed some tutorials on advanced profile and seems to be working ok.
However I have a few problems mainly with panels.
The first is, I have set up the panels, go to content and select what I want in each panel, i.e guestbook in right panel, all about me in top panel, It works ok but the content doesn't fit the boxes very well, in the guestbook panel some of the text goes out of the box.
In the all about me box the picture is really small in the top left corner.
Is there anyway to stretch the pictures to fit the panel, or at least make the image centred in the panel.
The second problem. The panel layout im using is two column stacked, so I have a top panel, bottom panel, left and right panel, this is ok, but insted of having a 50/50% column ratio, I was wondering if I could change it to 60/40% or 70/30% so the left panel is wider than the right.
The last problem is a little bit more trickier. Im currently using Amor Azul as the theme. For the most of the website this is ok, but with user created profiles, the page kind of displays a mixture of the panel layout I chose and the amor azul theme. Its like the user profile would be squashed into a little section of the page with the rest of the theme around it. So I disabled the content I didnt want, by using blocks, and setting certain blocks to be only displayed on certain pages, this seems to be working. So I would have the header and footer in Amor Azul theme, and the the profile inbetween the two, which is ok except the content that I have disabled insted of being removed completely the boxes are still there just without any content in them. So my site has, a header followed by, a thick blue line where the was content form the amor azul them, then the profile then the footer.
Can somebody give any advice on any of my problems. Thanks
