Description

Hi!
I would really appreciate some help with understanding how to modify the Messaging Templates. I have no problem with choosing and using tokens: I just don't understand what each Template does!

What is a Notification event? I don't have the Events module on my site. When is this Template used?
Notifications digest is presumably the template used when someone has requested daily or weekly digests?
What is a node event that makes it different from node creation, updates or comments? When is this Template used?
Node creation, updates and comments I understand.

What is the Mail: section that appears throughout all the Templates? They are all blank, but presumably they can be used to modify something - but what?

I'm sorry to be such a dimbo. A little help would be very much appreciated.

Just FYI...

I don't think either of those documents help MedMan with his question.

To be honest, I was pretty confused when I first setup the Message Templates the first time. It's not the most intuitive UI in the world and it doesn't provide much inline explanation of what each part does.

I think explaining it on here, though, would be a bit difficult. If I have time soon, I'll create a screencast. If anyone else beats me to it, I'm sure there are people other than MadMan who would appreciate it.

Good luck.

Can someone provide a nested outline of how all of the individual templates (admin > messaging > template) and template parts all fit together if they were to all be used in an email that's sent out?

For example... these are all the templates and template parts that I have listed in my installation:

  • Notifications event
    • Subject for event notifications
    • Header for event notifications
    • Content for event notifications
    • Footer for event notifications
  • Notifications digest
    • Subject for digested notifications
    • Header for digested notifications
    • Footer for digested notifications
  • Notifications for node events
    • Subject
    • Content
    • Digest Line
  • Notifications for node creation
    • Subject
    • Content
    • Digest Line
  • Notifications for node updates
    • Subject
    • Content
    • Digest Line
  • Notifications for node comments
    • Subject
    • Content
    • Digest Line
  • Groups digests per node
    • Group Title
    • Group Footer
  • Groups digests per node type
    • Group Title
    • Group Footer

How do all of these parts fit together in the final email that's sent out?

Done a complete rework of the template administration pages. I hope you like it now.

Anyway, this is a complex one, so specific usability suggestions still welcomed.

@NewbieToThisDrupalThing, thanks for the idea.

I forgot: done only for 6.x, it won't be backported.

From a usability point of view, the best thing and a *real* big help, would be live previews of the emails. However, I understand the complexity to build such thing.

The next best thing would be some *graphic* examples which explain which template is used where and when and together with which other templates.
