Massive Open-Source Software Directory

indie - September 9, 2008 - 21:02

Hello fellow Drupalers:

My original idea was to build a site that was essentially a collection of open-source projects; alas, an organized collection that can be easily perused by both users and developers alike. Let's just say that it ended up a lot bigger than that.

After two long years of building it up and tearing it down, tweaking ideas, themes, categories, etc. it has evolved into . . .

Everything Open-Source

TaDa!

*indie throws confetti and blows a kazoo*

There are still a few things to be accomplished, but with over 500 projects (including Drupal, of course) it's definitely off to a good start. If anyone notices a major blunder, miscategorization, broken link, obvious non open-source project included, please do let me know; allow me to chalk it up to hacking on lack of sleep. Otherwise, enjoy! :)

Nice work but the categories font were a bit too big for me (as the logo too). I felt the font shoulda been wee smaller.

Looks like Drupal...

... so there's a long way you could go with the theme.

Also, I didn't see a search box. Navigating through every open source project is impractical.

But this is a much needed site, as it's a lengthy process searching sourceforge, download, etc., plus many projects are hosted on their own sites. Thanks.

There is a search box. . .

There is a search box. . . on the bottom right column.

I'm still not seeing the search box...

... perhaps it's not enabled for anonymous users?

Other suggestions:

Subcategories would help a lot; use the rule of tens (ten main categories w/ ten subcategories each, with ten...)

Fields for various characteristics. I think the most important would be version number, so we can use it to see if our installations are up-to-date, and maturity level (dev/alpha/beta/rc/stable).

What? Simple is good! I'm

What?

Simple is good! I'm a minimalist when it comes to designs and themes, etc. ;)

nice site. A couple of constructive comments based on my impressions;

I think the logo is too big as I consequently have a lot of scrolling down to do.

Similarly when I select an category - for example image galleries - the text description is so long for each item there is lots of scrolling down. Could there be a short description with a "more" option?

druplamodules.com give ratings and popularity to items and this may be helpful for users of your site to decide between the many options

Good luck with your site!

good!

Nice site but need to work on theming!

Thanks for the feedback all;

Thanks for the feedback all; I'm actually probably not going to do much about the theme until I get the directory fully populated. For now, it's functional, readable site and does what it needs to do just fine. Besides, nobody ever agrees on what a "good" theme or design is, right? In such instances, it's probably best to stick w/the minimalist versions, eh? :)

P.S. Okay, I will go install some contributed themes to keep people happy.
