NOTICES silenced

this does not necessarily silence all NOTICEs, just the most obvious ones that
are generated by using a pretty generic HEAD drupal install.

i'm not sure if i've followed coding standards correctly, so i'd appreciate
feedback on even the slightest thing :)

again, attaching a patch crashed mozilla, so will try to attach with followup post
