I'm having a lot of problems with IE:

1) the spinner never goes away
2) I've got two close buttons next to each other
3) there are extra forward and back buttons showing up at the bottom
4) there seems to be a spacer gif that's missing or visible or something

I haven't been able to check in IE 7.

All these things together make the module almost too ugly to use. Are they fixed in the dev version?

I think this is a duplicate of #276985: Constant animation in I.E 7 and broken image and is caused by the nice menus module. You need to either disable the nice menus module or use the nice menus module patch from #235562: jQuery gets reloaded by drupal_add_js.

You should probably upgrade to the latest 6.x dev version of lightbox2 anyway though as it includes a couple of bug fixes.
