Drupal hasn't agree how to handle the proxy issue, but there are some approaches.
I wouldn't mind if this module provides it's own as a patch (http://drupal.org/node/7881#comment-1013281)

I don't have a proxy set up to be able to test anything in this area, so I can't even begin to work on any changes. Also, I'm not going to even consider including a patch to core as a part of the requirements for getting this module installed. There are people who cannot get it installed as it is.
