I found this issue.

1. Try to edit My Account
2. Nothing to change but then hit save button
3. The password field was blank and I'm expecting the password didn't change.
4. However, the password changed to "space"

I have the same annoying bug, especially when a user only need to change something simple at their edit Account Setting page (i.e. changing user picture or time zone) while forgetting to fill the password field.

Adding some text to remind users to fill the password field prior submitting Account Setting page will not help, as users tend to click submit button at this page.

I think the best work-around so far is to disable the Account Information form completely from Account Setting page by overiding core, and display it on separate tab with text reminder to fill password field before submission.
