I think the best depends on what kind of gallery you are building. I guess http://drupal.org/project/gallery is quite massive and should include everything you may need. There seems to be drupal 6 development version, but I have not tried that.

For lighter gallery solutions I have asked the same question my self but never got any answers.

Tell me which one you chose.
