I need a module that can take a user's input URL and go out and generate a screen capture and thumbnail of the site they are submitting for this directory type of website...

I would be very interested in hearing whether anything ever came of this, as I am looking for the same sort of thing.

It's nowhere near in the state that could be shared for something like this, but we're building an app off of the API from http://litmusapp.com to use for browser testing. It uses Amazon S3 but we then save the screenshots in a ZIP on our server. Not sure if that's appealing to you but might be an option that still uses a 3rd party but gives you a lot more control.
