Is there a way to put a class name of my choosing in the topmost node's div class? Thanks in advance.

I can't see it.
I would have expected node_page_default() to have used a theme_node_list or something that you could have used for zebra-striping or first,last styles.
It seems not.

Maybe views is more flexible that way.

In node.tpl.php. It's always 1 for the topmost story.
