I would like to turn off this PopUp_Add_n_Reference feature for certain fields (or only on on certain fields).

I too think this would be very useful. I believe the add & reference capability should be an option when creating the node reference field.

In my case I have a node type called Article:

It has multiple node reference fields.

Personal Profile (Content Profile)
Artist Profile (Content Profile)
Business Profile (Content Profile)
Person (Non-Member IE: Michael Jackson).

Video Clip
Audio
Event
Venue
Image
Brand

This allows the node creator to select all associated content, or create new content. But this doesn't make sense when choosing any of the ones marked with Content Profile, especially since these are generally limited to only 1 of each, per user.

Also some types are not supported (Any containing file fields or wysiwyg editors). Since I have a mix of content profiles (not logical for add & reference), file field (not compatible), and other (work fine) node reference fields, it makes this module go from EXTREMELY useful, to pretty much useless.

I think the best method to do this would be a simple configuration check box when creating the field to determine if the "add" link will be visible.

I agree that this would be a good feature. And it should be pretty simple to do.
If someone writes a patch for this I will definitely put it in.
