Sugest Themes For Me To Re-Skin
Basically I am kicking around the Idea of redoing some of the free Drupal themes graphics. I don't intend on modifying anything other then the look of the themes for example background images, typography, bordercolors but nothing else. I feel a lot of themes are solid but just don't look professional in quality so I think updating the graphics, typography and colors could go a long way to fix that. I am a professional graphic designer and I am just looking for suggestions as I don't know which of the available themes are most commonly used by people. Please post the name and if you can a link to themegarden.org where the theme resides along with what you'd like to see happen and I'll try to select the ones that seem in demand and aren't to much trouble to update.
Thanks!

make some GPL icons!
as a contribution you mean? giving back to the community?
this is a tangent from the themes idea, but one thing you could try is - in terms of graphics- developers are always looking for is icons. free icons to use GPL'd. it would be a great contribution. it also helps the developers make attractive modules, and make them easier to use.
- in administration themes
- in the fivestar module
- in the forum module
- shopping modules
issue from developer saying it is difficult to find true GPL'd icons
http://drupal.org/node/299545
read developers from ubercart talking about trouble finding good GPL'd icons to use:
http://www.ubercart.org/forum/announcements/3053/tango_icons_removed_core
call for icons in groups.drupal.org

how to info:

if you were able to contribute in this way, it would be greatly appreciated, i'm sure!
Meh.
Honestly, I care little about icons when the rest of the theme looks like it was made in 1998, also i believe there are a lot of good icons out there that are gpl and if you can't find ones you like its very affordable to purchase them from places such as istockphoto.com
what about just creating
what about just creating some snappy looking subthemes for zen-- it's meant to be flexible and used pretty much as is with just some css and graphics love.

Ah cool idea
Cool... well just to try to help, I went to themegarden to have a look (I usually don't pay much attention to contributed Drupal themes, as I mostly only make custom themes).
http://themegarden.org/drupal6/?theme=marinelli
It looks like a solid theme with a lot of decent elements, but could use a little sprucing up perhaps. The top menu is a bit plain and could do with a bit more interesting buttons/tabs (e.g. a touch of curve, a little gradient or depth, etc). The search form is horrid. Maybe a nicely designed footer area as seems to be the trend these days (you know for putting blocks with latest comments or whatnot). The gradient fading background of the current Blocks in the sidebar could maybe do with something a bit more clever :)

This one looks pretty nice, but apparently has no primary menu? Er actually I see something if I select-all the page, so maybe it's just broken. As with the previous theme mentioned, it could do with more creative design around blocks/regions, footer, etc.

This one looks great. It seems to have lousy heading styles though, and link colors are standard blue/purple. Content of the Blocks could also use some padding. The typography is so-so... could use a tune up.
As a general theme issue, it would be nice if more of the contributed themes got their Heading use correct (I know it's a debated topic, but I strongly believe from a semantic standpoint that the Site ID/logo should never be the H1... the H1 should be the page title). If you feel like fixing that on any themes you work on that would be terrific :) Also regarding headings, it would be nice to have well-thought-out size/color differentiation between heading levels. Lastly, breadcrumb trail links/dividers can often use a little love :)
Hope this helps get the ball rollin' :)

A few more, including thoughts on improvements
http://themegarden.org/drupal6/?theme=ubiquity
This one also looks promising given a little TLC. Apologies to the theme creator if he/she reads this, going to be completely honest. In my opinion:
http://themegarden.org/drupal6/?theme=wabi
Really like this one, nice soft color scheme, great block title backgrounds ... just a few nit picks:
http://themegarden.org/drupal6/?theme=fourseasons
Pretty strong, mostly just needs better tab graphics.
http://themegarden.org/drupal6/?theme=interactive_media
Almost there, though I think the primary navigation graphics are bit over the top for most people. Something more standard and tasteful/classic would make this useful to more people. I'd also bring in a few splashes color here and there similar to the light green color used in the title in the logo/title in the header when hovered.
http://drupal.org/project/ad_novus
This one is great, just a tiny bit buggy in Drupal... a little cleanup would make it more solid for people to use out of the box.
http://drupal.org/project/Amor_Azul
Great besides the tabs and a few other minor things... the tabs look a bit shabby, and also really ought not to go so low on the page, breaking usability principles/conventions (also the logo would look much nicer without the jagged edges).
In general I think every theme could also use a bit more "something" in regard to the footer areas. A lot of sites stick a variety of blocks of various content/links down there (other sites, not Drupal sites per se), and it would be nice to have styles ready to take on blocks that get assigned into the footer region (e.g. a block assigned in the footer may look completely different, have floats so they line up horizontally, etc). Also many themes don't give much thought to secondary and tertiary navigation, so any improvements in that area are welcome.
Hope this all helps :)

HI, How about combining the best of Ability, Tapestry, with...
Hi,
How about combining the best of several themes into one. Marinelli, I love, but I also like tapestry.
I was trying to combine the two, but ran into several problems with regions. (ha Tapestry has 30 or so.)
Anybody want to try?
