My company just posted a module called Autoban (for free download, GPL licensed etc.). It provides expiry for User Access Rules as well as a way to automatically create temporary IP blocking rules if visitors exceed configurable thresholds.

All of this is a basic defense against "bots" that download content and consume the resources of your site but offer little benefit in return. It extends the Drupal core access control facility, and so uses core functionality to actually perform the blocking.

Also, the module optionally makes use of an API module called The Internet Information Module. This module can lookup IP/hostname information, GeoIP information and Whois data for a given hostname or IP address. The information is displayed in a CSS pop-up "mini-window" to make it as convenient to view as possible.

it's not a shameless plug-- it's actually well deserved. Sounds like some very useful modules-- you should consider making them available via drupal.org (which as long as they're GPL is no problem).
