Super *super* noob with Drupal, and a designer at that.

I am looking for a module that is excellent for showcasing design or illustration (beyond lightbox), and is designer friendly (read: my tech skills are low).

Can you point out an example of what you're looking for? Without knowing more, my recommendation goes to making a gallery with CCK, Views, and Imagefield + Imagecache. Check the Beyond the Basics > HowTos I believe for a guide. Also google it as there is a "drupal school" video on doing it.

You might also want to check out nodecarousel and jcarousel. In my experience they can take some css to make them look right, but they are nice. See the sponsors block in the right sidebar: http://www.jamesrowen.com/

Currently I'm using photo upload (www.tedbramble.net) which has it's merits, but I'm always looking for something sleek and simple.

I'll check those modules out.
